This quantitative action research study will focus on improving students’ use of academic math vocabulary to
help them solve word problems. Different instructional strategies will be implemented in addition to direct
instruction. All instruction will be provided face to face during class time. The pre-assessment will be
administered prior to the instructional unit being taught. The post-assessment will be administered after the 7.5
hour unit. The pre- and post-assessment will be in the traditional format of pencil and paper. Quantitative data
from the two assessments will be analyzed and compared to determine if the instructional strategies implemented
had an impact on the participants’ understanding of academic math vocabulary to aid in solving word problems.
